Presentation of Empty Beds, Safra Square, Jerusalem
In Jewish tradition, it is customary not to count people. Throughout the generations, Jews have found ways to enumerate the population, but not by counting individuals: based on half a shekel donated to the Tabernacle and the Temple or by the number of groups celebrating the Passover holiday together in Jerusalem. But why? What is the reason for this?
Sometimes, we look at the numbers of the fallen, the missing, or any “number” of people, and these numbers can sometimes confuse us, keeping us in a quantitative mindset and causing us to forget that a person is not just a number on a list but a whole world. Therefore, whoever saves one life is as if they saved an entire world because each unique life has its own unique role in the world.
The presentation of “Empty Beds” reminds us that every empty bed symbolizes a person, a personality, an entire world that is missing, and we pray for the return of each and every one of the captives.
