Last night, a moving and powerful event took place at the Western Wall Plaza during the Selichot prayers, where thousands of people gathered in prayer for the return of the hostages and missing held by Hamas. The event was attended by the families of the hostages, who came to pray and draw strength for their loved ones in captivity. Together with the large crowd, they offered emotional prayers, not only for the hostages and the missing but also for peace and security of the State of Israel, the success of the IDF soldiers and security forces, and the recovery of all those injured in battle.

The families of the hostages at the Western Wall received a warm embrace from the crowd who came to support them in their moments of distress and pain. The atmosphere was charged with emotion as the crowd recited the words of the Selichot in unison, praying for the swift and safe return of the hostages and the missing to their homes. The prayers included requests for peace and security of the State of Israel, the success of IDF soldiers, and the strengthening of the security forces, who face numerous security challenges, as well as prayers for the recovery of the wounded who bear the scars of battle.

This year’s Selichot gathering took on an additional dimension of national solidarity and unity due to the sensitive security situation and the hope for the return of the hostages to the arms of their families. The general public came to show support, demonstrate mutual responsibility, and strengthen the families who are not left alone in their grief. The prayers and the immense support poured onto the families were meant not only to console them but also to empowet the hope for the release of their loved ones and to find a swift solution to both their personal and national distress.

Emerging from the ark into an empty yet liberating world, the dove embodies the yearning for self-reliance and divine trust. The message resonates today with the joy of those released from captivity — stepping once more into the paradise of freedom after deep suffering.

The Lesson of Cain – Parashat Bereshit
