Prayer for the Release of the Kidnapped Children and an “Attendance” Ceremony at the Western Wall
This morning, Thursday, the 3rd of Kislev, 5784 (November 16, 2023), the names of the 38 kidnapped children were called out in front of 38 empty chairs next to the Israeli flag at the Western Wall’s upper plaza.
Initiated by the “Forum for the Release of Kidnapped Children,” and with the goal of raising awareness in Israel and around the world about the incomprehensible situation of helpless children being held captive in Gaza, a special prayer ceremony was held this morning for their swift release.
The ceremony began with a prayer led by the rabbi of the Western Wall and holy sites, Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, for the speedy return of the kidnapped children to safety. Following the prayer, the names of all the kidnapped children were read aloud during the “Attendance” ceremony, conducted by the director of the Western Wall Heritage Foundation, Mordechai (Suli) Eliav.
The names of the children, as well as additional family members and all the kidnapped, are read aloud next to the stones of the Western Wall during a Psalm recitation near the Holy of Holies in the Western Wall Tunnels every day.
