Why The President of Argentina Cried at The Western Wall

In an interview conducted with Rabbi Wahnish, who is set to become the ambassador of Argentina to Israel, in the Jerusalem Post newspaper, the rabbi recounted that he met with Javier Milei, the president of Argentina, for a meeting that was supposed to last 15 minutes but extended to about two hours during which they had “heavenly discussions,” according to him.

During that same meeting at the Jewish community center, there was a live television broadcast from the Western Wall. Rabbi Wahnish asked Milei if he had visited the Western Wall, and when he replied in the negative, the rabbi promised to take him on a visit. This promise was remembered “it was a promise that will always be remembered… from then on, he began saying that he has a rabbi and a spiritual guide,” he recounted.

The anticipated trip was postponed several times due to the president’s busy schedule, but when he was elected, it was clear that his first diplomatic visit would be to Israel. “What Milei saw in Judaism was the constant search for truth and spirituality,” said the rabbi. Milei’s visit to the Western Wall was one of the first places he visited when he arrived in the country. “When he saw the ancient remnants of the Temple, Milei cried. He was so grateful that he was filled with emotions. I wanted to thank God for what he gave me,” Milei said.

This sentiment was also expressed when the president met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, “He told Netanyahu that he promised to go to the Western Wall and pray before meeting him or President Isaac Herzog. Netanyahu said it was an honor to lose priority to the Western Wall,” the rabbi recounted.

The Jerusalem Post reported that at the Western Wall, Milei prayed to God for help in releasing the Argentine prisoners from Hamas captivity. There is no doubt that a few days later, on February 12th, the IDF and police carried out a daring operation and released Fernando Simon Marman and Louis Norberto Haar.
