The menorah symbolizes a main event in Jewish history: The dedication of the Temple by the Maccabees after they beat the armies of Antiochus Epiphanes in 165 BCE. The main commandment of Chanukah is lighting Chanukah candles on every night of the eight-day festival. The connection to the Temple is the essence of Chanukah. Throughout the generations, the menorah has been made by various materials – stone, copper, silver, brass, and more. The designs are often influenced by the time, the style, and the environment in which they were created. The designs of menorahs often symbolize the Temple and its ritual utensils, holy sites, or historic events that express the bravery of Jews and the purification of the Temple.
